It is a collaboration between the Chinese & Singapore governments to develop a sustainable city
It is constructed on a 30 km2 area and is expected to be completed to the 2020s when it will house over 350 thousand residents
Environmental sustainability
The eco-city was built on a non-arable brownfield site
When it is completed, several areas will be transformed into flourishing green spaces
Integrated waste management, with emphasis on the recycling of material
There are efforts to conserve water use by using local, rain or desalinated water
Energy use is conserved and, if possible, renewable: for example, public bins have solar cells that harvest energy during the day to provide light at night
Public transport is mostly cheap, extensive and green, in order to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution
The passive design provides natural lighting & ventilation
Local heritage will be preserved, such as the nearby Ji canal
Social sustainability
The residential area is close to workplaces and other services in the city
Housing is subsidised in order to accommodate lower income people, allowing people from different economic backgrounds to interact
Social & recreational areas are close to residential areas in order to facilitate social harmony
The city has no barriers to accommodate more elderly or mobility-impaired people
Many school services are subsidised, such as the meals and bus service, as well as apartments for the family
Economic sustainability
There is an “eco-park”, a central area in which over 600 businesses have invested
