Population growth

  1. Birth rate is the number of births per 1000 people per year
  2. Death rate is the number of deaths per 1000 people per year
  3. Natural change is the difference between birth & death rates expressed as a percentage
  4. Natural increase is when birth rate exceeds death rate and has been typical until recently
  5. Natural decrease in when death rate exceeds birth rate and is becoming more common
  6. Life expectancy is the age a person is expected to live to
  7. Infant mortality is the number of deaths under the age of 1 per 1000 births
  8. Child mortality is the number of deaths under the age of 5 per 1000 births
  9. The fertility rate is the number of children born per woman
  10. The replacement level is the rate required for a sustainable population and is around 2.1, but many developed countries are not reaching this figure
  11. The dependency ratio is the ratio of dependents to workers, with a lower ratio being desirable
